Start hikes early, carry extra water, and watch for heat, wind, smoke, and thunderstorms. Angeles National Forest currently rates fire danger Very High; follow the active order and posted rules, with a no-flame meal plan ready.
Village walks, Jackson Lake stops, shorter PCT sections, and cabin weekends can shine as mornings cool. Keep smoke, wind, shorter daylight, and site-specific closures on the checklist.
Build plans around cooler starts, early sunsets, warm layers, and flexible routes. Check tire chains and confirm SR-2 and Big Pines access before making a high-elevation trail or drive the centerpiece.
Opening and snowfall dates are never guaranteed. Check Mountain High operations, chain controls, tire-chain fit, gloves, batteries, and backup routes immediately before leaving.

Use this for posted designated fee sites and standard amenity day-use areas on the Angeles National Forest. Look for fee-area signs at developed parking areas, picnic areas, trailheads, and other posted recreation sites.
Required at Mountain High concession-managed sites including Appletree, Arch, Grassy Hollow, Inspiration Point, Mescal, Northshore, Peavine, Vincent Gap, and Jackson Lake. Adventure and Interagency passes are not honored for those day-use or trailhead sites.
No Adventure Pass is usually needed for Wrightwood village parking, driving through without stopping, quick stretch/photo/restroom stops, ranger-station information stops, or places where a separate site-specific fee is already charged.

Before you go
As of September 3, Angeles National Forest is posting Very High fire danger through December 31. Caltrans still reports SR-2 closed from east of Newcomb's Ranch through Islip Saddle and onward to Vincent Gulch for emergency repairs. Conditions can change quickly, so use official sources before committing to a trailhead, picnic area, campsite, or scenic-drive route.
